The plain buildings in the gorge are designed in an industrial construction style to embody the story of the mines. This is Peter Zumthor´s zinc mine museum, located in allmannajuvet, Sauda, Norway. The Allmannajuvet zinc mines in Sauda, Ryfylke, were in operation from 1881 to 1899. The mining operations brought life to the village with as many as 168 employees and the export of ore on ships heading abroad. The operation was a forerunner of subsequent hydroelectric development and industrialisation in Sauda in Ryfylke. Today, the mining area is a museum. As part of the establishment In 2002, the road to Allmannajuvet becomes part of Norway’s National Tourist Routes. This is the beginning of the result we can see in Allmannajuvet today. The world-famous Zumthor was commissioned by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to design a facility that would communicate the mining histry of Sauda and make the old mines more attractive and accessible to visitors.
